Comprehensive Annual Physical! What’s that?

Overdue for your physical? Now is the time to get caught up!

The pandemic had a cascade (or should I say landslide?) of effects on our lives. One of the impacts that we’ve noticed as physicians is that many people missed their annual physicals. It’s understandable given the realities of the last two years. If you missed your annual physical, now is a great time to start catching up on personal health. An annual physical provides a snapshot of your overall health. Most importantly, it helps keep you on track with prevention while also identifying and addressing any potential health issues early on.

With direct primary care, we can be a bit creative to help your annual physical meet your needs. For example, we could meet first virtually to discuss your health and order labs, then complete the rest of the visit in person once the labs are back. Or, if you prefer, we could meet for one long visit and discuss everything at once.

Here are some example topics we may discuss at your physical:

  • Changes in your medical history and family history over the last year
  • Current medications and supplements
  • Recommended/needed vaccinations
  • Recommended labs according to your age and risk factors
  • Recommended screenings (like PAP tests, colonoscopy, mammograms)
  • Decide if you need screening for osteoporosis
  • Your current dietary habits and exercise habits
  • Your mental health

Of course, we are glad to discuss any other health questions or issues you may bring to the visit, though some may require another visit to fully address. Your doctor will also check your heart rate and blood pressure, which is often not obtained in virtual visits or phone calls. A physical exam can then be performed – and this is often the easiest and fastest part of the visit!

If you are behind on your annual physical, please schedule one soon. We will be so glad to see you, and you can find assurance knowing that you are taking the steps you need to support your health and well-being.
