Mint-Chocolate Chip Smoothie

Mint-Chocolate Chip Smoothie

This is my favorite healthy smoothie that tastes just like mint chocolate chip ice cream!

This smoothie has several nutrition superstars, but did you know that mint has the additional benefit of helping with indigestion and nausea? The compounds in mint leaves improve bile secretion which aids in digestion. If you suffer from nausea (menstrual, motion sickness, etc.) mint can help that too! Use in a smoothie, chew on a few leaves, or make infused water. I tend to get nauseous on airplanes (remember those?), so in addition to consuming mint, I find that using peppermint oil spray also really helps! But, for the delicious smoothie recipe, see below. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups non-dairy milk (I’ve been using Oat Milk lately)
  • 1 banana
  • 1 avocado
  • 1 cup fresh spinach
  • 3 springs of mint leaves
  • 1/8 to 1/4 tsp peppermint extract (depending on how much you love mint)
  • 1 TBSP of Cacao butter
  • Handful of dairy free chocolate chips (Enjoy Life brand or Hu Gems)
  • 1 cup of ice

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Add chocolate chips toward the end, and top with a few as well. As an alternative to the chocolate chips, you could use cacao nibs to lower the sugar content.

As a reminder, for any symptoms I mention on here, make sure to talk with a doctor. One with functional medicine knowledge would be best!
